The Story

Where it began, and where it could go

Not everything ships, and not everything is finished. This is the working history of Mezzala Games — the first lockdown build, the threads worth pulling next, and the timeline so far.

2020 · The first Mezzala game

Where it began

The first Mezzala game was built during the Covid lockdowns — a rough, homemade prototype that turned a long stretch indoors into the start of something. It set the template: football, simulated honestly, made by one person. Everything Mezzala Games has done since traces back to it.

Where this could go

Notes from an ongoing conversation about the studio's direction. Nothing here is a promise — they're the threads worth pulling next.

Mezzala isn't about simulating more football than Football Manager. It's about making football's exceptions matter more.

A headless simulation core

Separate the match engine from the interface completely: a deterministic, event-streaming core that any client can render. The same match, replayable identically in the current UI, a 2D view, or a 3D one.

A 3D match visualiser

Not a 3D football game from scratch — a visual client for an engine that already exists. A library of a few hundred reusable animation primitives, combined on the fly, with player attributes shaping not just whether a move comes off but how it looks.

Exceptions that matter

Leaning further into what makes Mezzala Legends distinctive: most players follow the rules, the greats stretch them, legends break them, certain partnerships rewrite them. The goal is mechanics that interact — not just more mechanics.

Discovery as progression

A discovery log — legends encountered, mechanics uncovered, cult sides faced — that turns “I've seen everything” into something to chase. Reveal that surprises exist; don't reveal the surprises.

A pattern that travels

Data → simulation → event stream → presentation isn't football-specific. The same architecture could drive a strategy game — units, cities, tiles — as readily as a match engine. One studio, one way of building.
